Don’t Let Winter Give You the Fitness Blues

Most of us are hesitant to exercise in Winter. Who wants to bundle up and go for a run on potentially slippery sidewalks? Who wants to warm up the car and brush off snow in the morning to make that early yoga class? But despite these obstacles, it’s important to try and get your body moving during these cold, dark months. Here are a few fun ways to help motivate you to embrace the season and rekindle your love of fitness.

Try the Unique Activities of Winter

Winter may be cold, but it also offers you some unique opportunities to exercise in ways you can’t any other time of the year. There are a variety of fun Winter activities that offer great health benefits.

  • Sledding – Sledding is a surprising way to get exercise. Trudging up a hill once you’ve sledded to the bottom can burn as much as 450 calories per hour. It’s also a great way to get out in the sunshine.
  • Snowshoeing – An effective, low impact exercise that burns twice the number of calories as walking.
  • Skiing – Improves proprioception, which is one’s ability to feel the position of different body parts and the effort that goes into moving them. Skiing is also great for balance and coordination, strengthening bones and joints, and increasing cardiovascular endurance.

Join a Winter Sports League

If you find it hard to get motivated and go to the gym this Winter, try joining an indoor sports league. Many indoor sports complexes offer soccer, basketball, volleyball, dodgeball and other fun team activities. Being part of a team is a great motivator because the other members will rely on you. Plus, you won’t have to deal with the weather outside and you may even make some new friends.

 Start a Snowball Fight

If you don’t feel like strapping snowboards or skates on your feet, get outside in the snow with friends or family for a good old-fashioned snowball fight! Moving in the snow is great exercise and a good way to combat those winter blues. Tap into your creativity and make up your own rules for the battle.
